Carters Dargaville manager Mark Kapa says it is always a fantastic day and it is a good time for everyone to be able to catch up and socialise together away from work. “Our builders, suppliers and sponsors are important and we enjoy organising the event and having the opportunity to interact with them on a personal level. We appreciate their support and the Northern Wairoa Golf Club for their continued support too.”

Logging trucks action call u by Ann Morgan

Inexperienced drivers and ‘shocking’ roads have been blamed for a spate of logging truck accidents in Kaipara and Northland after three within a week and at least five this year, prompting a call for government action.

Good life with flowers Good Life Soaps on Victoria Street, Dargaville are now members of the Interflora and Petals florist network …

The latest accident happened at Awakino Point and follows a logging truck crash in Dargaville the week before and comes after logs spilled across Otaika Valley Road near Whangarei when a fully laden truck and trailer unit lost control and rolled on a bend on April 11. Northland MP Winston Peters is calling for the government to provide specialist log truck driver training, noting

some trucking firms are employing overseas drivers and experienced operators are agreeing with him. Kaipara logging truck owner driver Dave McCullough says there needs to be more training for inexperienced drivers and the condition of Northland roads “is really bad compared to others around the country. You just can’t get the young fellows to drive the trucks

anymore. They used to be able to go with a driver so they could be taught on the job. The rules have changed now and it is too hard to do this anymore. “I believe most of the ones that do have the crashes don’t have the experience and the shocking roads certainly don’t help. continued on page 3 …

The group travelled from Pahi by coach and spent the night at the Northern Wairoa Hotel before visiting the Dargaville Museum the following day and then returning on the boat back to Helensville. RSA Friendship Club treasurer Pat Clews said the group often go on outings together and for many of the members it was their first time in Dargaville. “We wanted to visit the Kaipara to learn more about the history. We really enjoyed our stay at the Northern Wairoa Hotel and the conducted tour through the museum.” Museum volunteer Ron Halliday, who also helped build the museum, said a highlight of the tour was the gum

washing machine which was restored by the late George Sutich. Kaipara Cruises owner-operator Terry Somers had an increase in business this tourist season and he has made this trip 12 times since Christmas. “People are most impressed by the harbour and the Northern Wairoa Hotel. We market it as a step back in time and people travel like they would have done in the past,” Terry said. “We focus on the history, the scenery and the ecology of the harbour. In the early days people would get a train to Helensville, and then get the steamer from Helensville to Dargaville. It is a nostalgic journey retracing that same route.” ¢

Small turnout for hearings

u by Ayla Miller

A number of absences at the Kai Iwi Lakes — Taharoa Domain — Draft Reserve Management Plan hearings came as a disappointment to the panel with only an estimated 45 attending out of an expected 200. Julie Geange spoke on behalf of the Friends of Kai Iwi Lakes working group whose purpose for forming was to provide evidence based information to the community to use in their submissions to Kaipara District Council. The group challenged some of the proposed changes such as the banning of the powerboats, revegetation of Promenade Point and the addition of cabins at Pine Beach. “We are concerned about the impact these changes will have on the economy and community,” she said. Local business woman and lawyer, Emma

Smith, said she is not opposed to the management plan but believes further information needs to be gathered about the economic impact the proposed changes will have on local businesses, suggesting further studies and business plans need to be explored. “It is a requirement to consider the impact these changes will have on the economy, however there has been no sincere engagement with the business community,” she said. Ms Smith also suggested the council had to regain the public’s trust and was suspicious of the timing of the review.

“It is the commissioner’s job to rebuild trust and confidence in the council so why the rush when the plan is already out of date?” Despite the low turnout, Taharoa Domain Governance Committee chair, Peter Winder, says the panel found those who did speak their submissions were very helpful.

Mr Winder said the panel are now in the process of digesting what they have heard. “We now need to reflect on what the submissions say, deliberate and decide on how to proceed, and we will be doing that over the next month. What will happen after that will depend on what decision we make.” ¢

Shooting some basketball outside of school is about to get a whole lot easier with a new half-court at Selwyn Park due to be completed in coming days. Kaipara District Council Parks and Community Manager, Sue Hodge, said the court is the result of feedback from the KDC’s Action Plan consultation process with the community. Dargaville High School Head of Department for sport, Jess McPherson, said the court will enhance the school’s existing basketball programme. “It’s a plus and a win to give the community access to a facility that helps promote an active lifestyle.” DHS student and member of the school’s basketball team, p Shooting hoops: Tyron Clark-Burnett, Alicia Covacich, Leighton Pomare and Kiana Raeli Tyron Clark-Burnett, said having the court at the park was convenient. Leaders in innovation u by Rose Stirling

There’s a quote that says a world without engineers is a world without race cars. Crompton Engineering have been at the cutting edge of creative innovation when it comes to servicing local industries and they’ve been doing so now for 40 years. Their story began in 1976 when Bruce Crompton with his newly married wife Elaine purchased the business off Lowther Engineering — a business of some 25 years’ standing. “I had been to the United Kingdom and Europe for a while and when I came back I ended up working in engineering at the oil refinery in Whangarei. He puts his business success down to being local and finding it’s own niche. “As a local business we tend to be in touch with our customers and identify with many of the problems they have and we can equate them to our own situation. First gyrocopter for aeroclub

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER April 26 - 2016

u by Ayla Miller

Have you ever dreamt of riding a motorbike in the sky? Well Dargaville Aeroclub can almost make this dream come true with the latest addition to their fleet, a MTOsport auto gyrocopter. Gyrocopters are a recreational aircraft and the club’s gyrocopter offers an open air experience for one pilot and one passenger. Veteran pilot and chief flight instructor Murray Foster says this new addition will give flight enthusiasts another option when learning to fly with the club. “You can fly very slow and turbulence doesn’t affect them the same. People have the idea that they are dangerous but in fact they are safer than a fixed wing aircraft because you can fly slow and almost hover them like a helicopter.” The gyrocopter uses ordinary car petrol and members of the club do their own maintenance which keeps the cost down. The latest addition is expected to attract new members to the club which is known around the country for offering free instruction. “It is a unique opportunity. And a lot of people have never flown one before but they are very keen. It is like sitting on a bike and it gives you more of a feeling of being outside,” Murray says. Gyrocopter flight instructor Rusty Russell has been flying for five years and says people are attracted to the aircraft because it is something different. “It’s exciting and it is a bit of a novelty as you

Check your chimney for nests It is interesting how we have a run of different birds this time of the year. We received quite a few shearwaters early this month and the reason for this was easterly winds which have been around for a few months. With the rough water they lose their water protected coat this means they get very cold and the feathers get water logged. Most of the sea birds only need a rest at the Centre for a few days. The harrier hawk was the next bird to get into trouble. I think this could be the lack of food as we have received 14 so far this month - from young ones to older ones - and all have been hit on the road. The hawk is a timid bird and they do a great job of cleaning up the road kill but some people still like to run them over just for fun. I know at times you can’t avoid them but if you see someone run one over make a note of the time, date and registration number of the vehicle and give me a call. Many of our endemic (New Zealand only) and native birds were here long before humans set foot on the place so they should have some right and someone to speak for them which is why we are here. With visitor numbers slowing down now it’s time to catch up with maintenance around the Centre. The big winds a few weeks ago smashed big branches off the tree in the day pen so that’s going to take a while to clean up but we have the right guy to do the job for us Paul Gosling. One thing we never do at the Centre is ask a tradesperson to do the work free, or on the cheap. Now a reminder for winter. Birds are notorious for building nests in chimneys during summer so before you start your winter fire routine – have your chimneys checked please! Birds that commonly like building nests are the starling, sparrow and rosella. The soot build up is a great place to hold the dry grass and bits of paper that they use for the nest. Welcome to Mangawhai A skateboarding adventure u by Ann Morgan

Daniel Hawes runs skateboarding classes at the Mangawhai Activity Zone and took a few pupils on a trip to Auckland to sample other skate parks. “I started giving lessons when I came from Hawaii. The skatepark here is world class and no one was really using it. Occasionally a couple of kids would come down and I was able to give them a few lessons and help them out,” said Daniel. Daniel said things progressed from there. “It began with one and before I knew it there were 10–15 coming to each class. They all progressed rapidly, it is really encouraging to see. When there’s no surf they can come and skate. Children have met others their age and with the same interests. It gives them something to do outside school. “Underground Skate in Orewa had a trip to Auckland advertised and the kids that were going asked if I could be a supervisor. There were more than 100

grommets — under 18-year-olds all up. It was a great adventure for them. “It was good for the kids because they got to sample the different parks and meet new people from all over the place. They can bounce off everyone’s energy and learn and copy new things. Daniel says skateboarding helps with coordination and gets the kids outside in the sun. “It is great to be able to provide that. There is another trip organised for Friday April 29 from Orewa. Anyone wanting to go can contact Taila at Underground Skate in Orewa. “The trip took us to four parks in Auckland and we finished back in Orewa at the skatepark until the sun went down. Our lessons are now over for winter and we will be back up and running in August.” ¢

ADVERTORIAL

Commercial lease advice If you are contemplating a business purchase, or starting your own business, you will likely need to enter into a commercial lease. In order to be valid, a commercial lease must include the following elements: The lease must be for a time period that is certain, unless the lease is periodic and the leased premises must be identified. The tenant must be granted the legal right of exclusive possession of the property and the lease must be properly created as a legally enforceable contract. A written lease ensures that the parties know exactly what their rights and obligations are. Unfortunately, we see many occasions where a lease is entered into verbally. Such arrangements become headaches for both parties when things turn sour. The parties are free to negotiate the terms in a lease agreement that may suit their needs. Because of the nature of commercial property and its uses the parties should provide in the lease agreement for issues such as fixtures and fittings and uses of the property subject to the lease itself or as may be required. The rights and obligations of the landlord and tenant are provided for in legislation, and are implied by the law into all commercial leases, for example:

The tenant — the lessee — must pay the rent when it is due under the lease. The landlord — the lessor — is entitled to enter the premises at all reasonable times to view the state of repair. The landlord can serve the tenant with a notice requiring the tenant to repair any defect within a reasonable period of time specified in the notice. If you need more information on commercial leases please contact Alistair Hammond at Hammonds Law.

Make mum feel special Every year we set aside one day to celebrate the women who are, quite simply, the reason for our existence. Mother’s Day was first celebrated in the United States in the early 20th century although similar festivals and days have been dedicated to mothers all over the world and throughout history. Nowadays it is traditionally celebrated by cooking mum breakfast in bed and showering her with gifts. It is a difficult task, thanking her for support and unconditional love, but the most important thing is to make her feel appreciated, for all those times she was a personal chef, taxi driver, security guard and teacher. If your mother is one to compete with Imelda Marcos in the shoe department, take her to The Shoe Box and let owner Jo Duder help you find the perfect pair for your her and maybe even a pair for yourself. “Enjoy your Mother. Take the time to appreciate her if she is still with you and make the day special,” says Jo. Perhaps spoil her with some incense from Snazzi Gifts or a mystical ornament. Maybe even a colouring book to help her unwind after a busy day and a carefully selected card containing some heartfelt words of gratitude. Jewellery or her favourite crystals are another sure way to make your mum feel the love on her special day. If it’s designer homeware your mother is after find her something unique from Dreams in Maungaturoto. The locally owned store has a wide range of top quality gifts and accessories. CHIMNEY SWEEP AND SAFETY CHECK

Safety the watchword for Autumn u by Andy Bryenton

“The WOF & Servicing for your fire”

With so many new residents in the Kaipara region this Autumn — many of whom have come to find a country lifestyle after residing in the big city — it was a timely idea for the local representatives of Stihl and Polaris to join forces, hosting a seminar on outdoor power and safety recently.

The message delivered at Te Kopuru’s Southern Rugby clubrooms was a pertinent one for the season, as novices and veterans alike open up the toolshed and reach for their chainsaws, anticipating a hefty woodpile to see them through winter. Stihl, who have been in the business of providing saws to forestry worldwide for decades, are strong advocates of chainsaw safety, going so far as to sponsor programmes all over the globe for everyone from first-time kindling cutters to grizzled veterans of the tall timber. Recognising that many of our recent arrivals may be picking up a chainsaw for the first time was reason enough to run through the basics of safety here in the west Kaipara — a message which always bears repeating. The first principle is to make sure you are working with a

saw that’s fit for purpose. A badly tuned, sputtering and blunt machine is more of a danger to the user than to any logs you might encounter! A quick check-up by your local chainsaw expert is advised before you get into the big chores, as is a hard look at the chain itself. Learning to sharpen those teeth is a skill worth having, and simple tools exist to make it an easy task. For those too far gone, it’s more economical and safe to simply replace the chain, rather than experiencing that ‘carving the roast with a spoon’ feeling all winter long. The other key message — which is sometimes overlooked in New Zealand, with our can-do, she’ll-beright attitude — is that safety p A full set of gloves, boots, helmet, eye and ear protection and chaps for complete safety begins with the right gear. AUTO

A winning combination It was smiles all round as the big prizes were awarded in two automotive hamper draws. Both Carter’s Tyres Dargaville and Dargaville Diesel Specialists have adopted the generous idea of rewarding a lucky customer each month with cupboards full of groceries. Carter’s Tyres’ winner Heather was rapt with a whopping haul of Countdown gift vouchers — and there will be another winner this month — someone who has had their tyres repaired by the friendly local team in blue. Meanwhile it’s all change at Dargaville Diesel Specialists, as seasoned veteran of the auto trade Brent Nurse comes to help fellow mechanic and WOF guru Rodney get to grips with a flood of pre-winter work. The pair have over 80 years of hands-on experience between them and are both well known around the Dargaville region for their wizardry in bringing ailing motors back to life. It was a whole different kind of ‘fuel’ which Rodney was handing out last week though, as the family of ‘Sonny’ Nisbet came down to gratefully receive a big hamper full of goodies — his prize in the monthly Dargaville Diesel draw. ¢

Son: ‘Dad, do spiders taste good?’ Dad: ‘Yuck! Why should you ask that kind of thing at dinner?’ p ‘Sonny’ Nisbet’s family collect their prize from Dargaville Diesel — a hamper full of Autumn essentials

Son – ‘Because, Dad, there was a spider in your mashed potatoes, but now there’s just half of one.’

There’s art in tartan

u by Rose Stirling

You don’t necessarily need tartan fabric to create a tartan masterpiece according to Patsy Montgomery who encourages artists taking part in this year’s Art N Tartan Wearable Art Awards in Waipu. “It can be created in any way you choose to dream up, whether it be welded, woven or painted on your fabrics — the sky’s the limit. So get your head in the clouds and start dreaming and making because the Art N Tartan Awards are just around the corner,” she says. This year is the sixth event and the theme is play and playfulness as a source of creativity. Ms Montgomery says the festival has become a popular event on Waipu’s calendar and a move to the newly completed Celtic Barn in Waipu has meant tripling the audience capacity. “The success of the show is a result of enormous volunteer endeavour under the auspices of Waipu Museum. The show was initially the brainchild of staff members at the Museum

who dreamed it up to become a signature event for Waipu’s annual festival ‘Waipu in Tartan’. The festival celebrates the 1782 repeal of a law forbidding Highland men and boys from the wearing of tartan as a means of quelling ‘Highland rebelliousness’ and is celebrated annually among Scots communities all around the world. The Waipu awards offers eleven $1,000 category prizes — the Supreme Award of $3,000, a Janome sewing machine, or a BOC portable welder, for a total prize pool of $16,000 dollars. The final date for entry forms is now May 8. Actual entries must be completed by the preliminary judging day on June 19. Entry forms are available from www. waipumuseum.com or phone the museum on 09 432 0746. ¢
